A Christmas market, also known as Christkindlmarkt, Christkindlesmarkt, Christkindlmarket, and as we would say Weihnachtsmarkt. It is a street market associated with the celebration of Christmas during the four weeks of Advent. These markets are originated in Germany, but are now held in many other countries.
Each year at advent, the many wonderful Christmas markets stretch out through Hamburg’s city centre - which tends to make shopping for presents a genuine experience. This is certainly where you could make plans for your Hamburg tour.
Experience the wintertime wonder in the Hanseatic City. A large number of lights are shown on the at the Alster and Elbe. Hamburg turns into a real Christmas fairy-tale.
Historic Christmas market on Rathausmarkt / Town Hall
The prettiest is set just outside Hamburg’s most impressive town hall.
Every year at Christmas time, against the impressive backdrop of the venerable, historic Town Hall of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, approximately a hundred traders arrive for one of the city’s largest and loveliest Christmas markets.
The lovingly created market architecture by Roncalli director Bernhard Paul tends to make the Christmas marketplace stick out from the standard pre-Christmas occasions in other towns.
A particular point of attraction is the Spielzeuggasse (toy street). This is where merchants from around the world offer toys that make not only children’s hearts beat faster. The scent of roasted almonds and fir sprigs fills the air.
But there is also a street with all kind of food and German specialties. The Hamburg Town Hall Christmas Market is filled with hand-crafted Christmas decorations from the Erzgebirge region and looked after by woodcarvers from Tyrol, bakers form Aachen (producing their famous “printen” cookies on the scene) or gingerbread makers from Nuremberg and the pottery is made by artists from the Lausitz region.
There is a Christmas parade through the festively decorated city centre every Saturday during Advent. It always starts in Mönckebergstraße at Galeria Kaufhof / Saturn.
